Evaluation of Production of Instructional Materials by Preservice Biology Teachers in Federal Universities in Northeast Nigeria

Abstract

The study evaluates the production of instructional materials by preservice biology teachers in federal universities in Northeast Nigeria. The research design adopted in this study was a descriptive survey type. The study has 3 objectives. 105 300-level Biology Education students from University of Maiduguri formed the population for the study and cluster sampling was used to select the 30 students. The instruments titled “Pre-Service Biology Teachers Production of Instructional Materials Checklist (PBTPIMC)” was used in the study. The reliability of the instruments was established in order to ensure internal consistency of the test. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) was used to answer the three research questions. The findings revealed that. The instruments PBTPIMC is highly reliable (r = .972). Pre-service teachers possess strong foundational production skills, particularly in Drawing and Lettering enabling the creation of high-quality manual aids. Pre-service teachers are pedagogically sound and theory-driven but technologically frustrated because of lack of funding, insufficient electricity, bad network among others. The researcher recommended that, Federal universities should restructure educational technology courses to prioritize hands-on "production" skills specifically software design (PowerPoint, Canva, and interactive tools) rather than focusing solely on theoretical models. Universities and teaching practice coordinators should prioritize posting pre-service Biology teachers to schools that can provide basic power and internet facilities, or provide portable alternative power sources (like solar power banks) to students and more structured mentorship between lecturers and pre-service Biology teachers during the production phase to bridge the gap between instructional design theory and practical output.
