Abstract

Solid waste management remains a major environmental and public health challenge in many urban markets across Nigeria. Rapid urbanization, population growth, and increased commercial activities have significantly increased the volume of municipal waste generated in urban centers. This study assessed the efficiency of solid waste management practices in Ogbogonogo Market, Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria. A mixed-methods research design involving questionnaires, interviews, observation, and field surveys was adopted. Data were collected from 50 respondents, comprising traders, customers, sanitation workers, and local authorities. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to evaluate key indicators like; availability of waste bins, frequency of waste collection, environmental cleanliness, enforcement of sanitation laws, and awareness of proper waste disposal practices. Findings revealed major inefficiencies in the existing waste management system. About 72% of respondents rated the waste management system as ineffective or not effective. Inadequate waste bins, irregular waste collection, weak enforcement of sanitation regulations, and poor public awareness were identified as major challenges. The study observed indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains and open spaces, contributing to environmental degradation and public health risks. The study recommends improved waste infrastructure, regular waste collection, stricter enforcement of sanitation laws, public sensitization campaigns, and stronger public-private partnerships to enhance sustainable waste management in the market. The findings provide useful insights for policymakers, environmental agencies, and urban planners seeking to improve waste management practices in commercial centers across Nigeria.
