Impact of Benzene 1,2 Dicarboxylic Acid ( Phthalic Acid ) and Benzene 3,4,5 Tri-Hydroxybenzoic Acid ( Gallic Acid ) on the Nucleation of Alumina Hydrate from Saturated Bayer Liquor

Max A. Wellington, Ph.D.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of benzene 1, 2 dicarboxylic acid (phthalate) and benzene 3,4,5 tri-hydroxybenzoic acid (gallate), on the rate of the primary and secondary nucleation of alumina hydrate from pregnant Bayer liquor samples at 250C. Our results showed that phthalate induced an increase in primary nucleation whereas gallate seemed to inhibit or severely retard the primary nucleation process altogether as there was almost no hydrate precipitation produced even after 30 days. In the presence of alumina hydrate seed both phthalate and gallate induced secondary nucleation resulting in yields of 68 and 34 g/L respectively albeit lower than the yield from the control (78 g/L). The rate and yield of secondary nucleation using alumina hydrate seed was also examined by simulating standard Bayer process conditions and was found to be about 10 times more productive when compared to primary nucleation.
