Abstract

The reproductive biology of fish is essential for understanding population dynamics and ensuring sustainable fisheries management. This study investigated the gonadosomatic index and fecundity of Oreochromis niloticus in Ekoli Creek, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. A total of 324 specimens were collected monthly from August 2023 to April 2024 and analyzed using standard morphometric and reproductive methods. Gonadosomatic index was calculated as the ratio of gonad weight to body weight, while fecundity was estimated using the gravimetric method. The results revealed clear seasonal variation in reproductive indices, with peak GSI and fecundity recorded in November, indicating the peak spawning period. Fecundity showed a positive relationship with body weight and total length, suggesting that larger females contribute more to reproduction. The findings provide baseline data for effective fisheries management and conservation of O. niloticus in Ekoli Creek.
