Assessment of Physicochemical and Microbial Analysis of Waste Water from Champion Breweries, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
Abstract
The study assessed the physicochemical and microbial properties of breweries waste water from Champion Breweries PLC, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State for alternative use. It also aimed at comparing the physicochemical properties of the breweries waste water with World Health Organization standards for irrigation water as well as to determine microbial population in the breweries waste water from the study area. Breweries waste water sample was obtained at Champion Breweries PLC, Uyo in a one- litre plastic bottle and taken to the laboratory within 24 hours for analysis. The parameters were analyzed using standard laboratory procedures. Results obtained revealed that breweries waste water is acidic with pH of 5.71, its conductivity is low while temperature is 28.9. Other parameters include DO with 7.27 Mg/L, BOD with 2.17 Mg/L, COD with 5.76 Mg/L, TDS with 3.21 Mg/L and TSS with 0.13 Mg/L. It has alkalinity of 3.44 Mg/L, Chloride of 49.59 Mg/L, salinity of 0.058 Mg/L, Phosphate of 6.39 Mg/L, Ammonia of 11.229 Mg/L, Nitrate and Nitrite of 12.84 and 0.16 Mg/L, Ca of 39.17 Mg/L, Mg of 22.99 Mg/L, Na of 0.161 Mg/L and K of 0.017 Mg/L. It also contains turbidity of 0.13 Ntu, acidity of 7.4 Mg/L and Fe of 3.822 Mg/L. The highest occurring bacteria species isolated in breweries waste water is the Klebsiella (17.4 %) followed by Pseudomonas pyocynes (15.9 %), Streptococcus aureus (14.5 %) while Streptococuus faecalis and Micrococcus were 11.6 % respectively, followed by Escherichia coli with 10.1 % while Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus polymaixa occupied 5.8, 7.2 and 5.8 % respectively. Similarly, the highest occurring fungi species isolated in BWW include Aspergillus niger (22.2 %), Penecilllium expansium (17.8 %), Aspergillus flavuus (13.3 %), Aspergilus fumigates (8.9 %), Pencicilium notatium, Rhyzopus oryzae and Paecilomyceus sp with 6.7 % respectively while Mucor muccedo, Tricophytons sp, Aspergillus terreus and Aspergillus glaucus occupied 4.4, 2.2, 2.2 and 4.4 % respectively. It was concluded that breweries waste water is contaminated. It was recommended for irrigation due to high level of nutrients in the water. Though it is recommended for irrigation, it should also be treated to reduce the microbial load so that it will not cause harm to animals which may consume it.
