Assessment of Solid Waste Management Practices in Port Harcourt, Rivers State

Abstract

Solid waste management remains a critical challenge in many developing countries, with implications for public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. This study investigated the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of respondents and assessed their knowledge, awareness, and perceptions of solid waste management in a selected community. A total of 400 respondents were surveyed using structured questionnaires, and data were analyzed to determine levels of awareness, misconceptions, and perceived responsibilities regarding waste management. The demographic profile revealed that respondents were predominantly middle-aged (35.3%), female (55%), and fairly educated, with 42.5% attaining secondary education and 23% tertiary education. Marital status distribution showed that 44.2% were married, while 28% were single. These characteristics suggest a population actively engaged in household and community activities, making them critical stakeholders in waste management initiatives. Knowledge of solid waste management was generally high. Respondents demonstrated strong awareness of the health, environmental, and economic benefits of proper waste disposal. For instance, 96.5% recognized its role in reducing disease occurrence, while 97.8% acknowledged that poor disposal blocks gutters and roads. Additionally, 84% agreed that waste management can generate income and employment opportunities. However, misconceptions persisted, particularly regarding incineration, which 81.3% considered effective despite its environmental limitations. Furthermore, 47.8% believed waste management is solely the responsibility of government, reflecting a limited understanding of shared responsibility. The study concludes that while awareness of solid waste management is high, misconceptions and limited perceptions of responsibility remain barriers to sustainable practices. It recommends community-based sensitization programs, inclusive educational campaigns, and participatory approaches to strengthen technical knowledge and promote shared responsibility among households, communities, and government agencies. This research contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between demographic characteristics and waste management awareness, highlighting misconceptions that hinder sustainable practices, and emphasizing the importance of community participation. The findings have significant implications for policymakers, environmental managers, and community leaders seeking to design effective waste management interventions that are inclusive, participatory, and sustainable.
