Incorporating Modern Technology in Teaching and Learning English Language as a Second Language

Abstract

Technology has improved rapidly in recent years and this improvement is affecting not just education but all aspects of human endeavours. In this context, traditional education methods have become inadequate as technology rapidly changes learners’ expectations and learning habits. The rapid progress of technology makes technology usage indispensable for second language teaching and learning. Digital technologies are transforming formal educational practices that extend across space and time, blurring the traditional boundaries of learning in school and out of school. The paper examines the use of technology in teaching and learning English as a second language. Based on extensive review of secondary data, this paper x-rays the different modern technologies, the advantages and disadvantages associated with them, the impact they have on students, and possible areas for development. Furthermore, the paper looks into online resources, language learning games, digital libraries, social media, and other technological software that have been integrated into language classrooms. While discussing disadvantages such as lack of teacher training, and advantages such as increased classroom engagement, the paper also gives suggestions on how to effectively integrate technology into Second Language teaching. The paper concludes that the effectiveness of any technological tool depends on the knowledge and expertise of the qualified language teacher who manages and facilitates the language learning environment
