Relative Thermo-Mechanical Performance of Multi-Residue Biomass Briquettes: The Effect of Coconut Shell Addition

Alhaji Bukar Abubakar, and Muhammad I.M

Abstract

In this paper, we compared the thermo-mechanical characteristics of biomass briquettes multi- residue with carbonized coconut shell added and without it. Based on the same processing conditions, two formulations of briquette were prepared but with different feedstock composition. Some of the performance measures used were ignition time, burning duration, water boiling efficiency, ash content, and mechanical strength. The findings have shown that briquettes with no shell of coconuts had a faster ignition (3.2 min), which is due to increased porosity. However, briquettes with coconut shell showed better overall performance, such as, higher burning time (74 min), lower ash content (8.4%), better water boiling performance (11 min) and greater mechanical stability. These differences were statistically proven (p < 0.05). The better-quality performance is associated with higher fixed carbon content and density provided by coconut shell. The results indicate that coconut shell can be used as a useful additive to enhance the energy density, combustion stability and structural integrity of biomass briquettes, and is therefore applicable in domestic and small-scale energy production.
