Globalization and Poverty Alleviation in Africa: An Assessment of The Impact of the N-Power Programme in Taraba State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examines the impact of globalization on poverty alleviation in Africa, focusing on the N-Power Programme in Taraba State, Nigeria. Launched in 2016, the programme aims to reduce youth unemployment through skills training, temporary employment, and stipends. Using a mixed- method approach involving 364 beneficiaries and key stakeholders, the study finds that while the programme provides short-term financial relief and skills acquisition, its long-term impact on poverty reduction is limited. Challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited access to capital, and mismatch between acquired skills and local economic needs reduce its sustainability. The study concludes that for greater impact, N-Power should be integrated into broader development strategies that strengthen institutions, improve infrastructure, and align skills with market demands to ensure sustainable poverty alleviation.
