Evaluation of AI-Powered Mobile Extension Platforms and Their Effectiveness in Enhancing Farmer Advisory Services and Agricultural Productivity in South-East Nigeria
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered mobile extension platforms present strategic opportunities for strengthening agricultural information dissemination, improving farmer–extension interaction, and enhancing innovation diffusion within agricultural extension systems. This study evaluated the effectiveness of AI-powered mobile extension platforms in enhancing farmer advisory services and agricultural productivity in South-East Nigeria using a descriptive survey research design. Data were collected from one hundred and eighty respondents comprising farmers and extension agents across Agricultural Development Programme zones in Imo, Abia, and Enugu States using a structured questionnaire. Results showed the availability of several AI-powered mobile advisory platforms including weather advisory applications (83.3%), mobile agricultural advisory apps (71.4%), and digital market information platforms (65.5%), while advanced tools such as AI- based crop diagnostic applications (56.5%) and chatbot-based advisory systems (48.8%) were relatively less available. Utilization of AI-powered advisory platforms was moderate (x̄ = 3.08), with farmers mostly using these technologies for weather forecasting (x̄ = 3.45), pest and disease management advice (x̄ = 3.12), and interaction with extension agents through digital platforms (x̄ = 3.21). Perceived benefits included timely delivery of agricultural information (x̄ = 3.52), increased access to expert advisory services (x̄ = 3.41), improved communication between farmers and extension agents (x̄ = 3.34), and enhanced adoption of improved farming practices (x̄ = 3.33). Major constraints affecting adoption included poor internet connectivity (x̄ = 3.62), low digital literacy among farmers (x̄ = 3.45), limited access to smartphones (x̄ = 3.28), and high cost of mobile data services (x̄ = 3.21). Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship (r = 0.64, p < 0.05) between the utilization of AI-powered mobile extension platforms and agricultural productivity. The study concluded that strengthening digital agricultural advisory systems requires deliberate policy interventions including investment in rural digital infrastructure, integration of AI-driven advisory platforms into extension service delivery, and continuous digital capacity development for farmers and extension personnel. A coordinated digital agricultural extension framework is recommended to enhance agricultural productivity, inclusiveness, and sustainable rural development in Nigeria.
