The Impact of August Meeting in Promotion of Cultural and Ethical Values in Imo State: A Case Study of Njaba Local Government Area

Ifeanyi C. Ehule, Nnamuka M. Nwamaka.

Abstract

This study examined the impact of the August Meeting on the promotion of cultural and ethical values in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Using a sample of 400 married women (295 valid responses), data were analyzed with simple percentages. Findings showed that although awareness of the August Meeting was high, participation was mostly moderate, with some women rarely or never attending. Reduced participation was linked to loss of cultural identity and weakening of ethical values. The study also found that while many women believe the August Meeting promotes and preserves cultural heritage through practices like storytelling and traditional activities, changes in its structure have, in some cases, reduced its traditional significance. Major challenges identified include low participation, financial constraints, and limited institutional support. Suggested strategies include increasing awareness, reducing financial burdens, encouraging unity, and strengthening community and government support. The study concluded that the August Meeting remains important for cultural and ethical promotion, but improvements are needed to sustain its relevance and effectiveness
