Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Social Studies Instruction and Students’ Learning Outcomes in Junior Secondary Schools

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-integrated instruction on students’ learning outcomes in Social Studies among junior secondary school students in AMAC, Abuja. The study adopted a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design involving two intact classes: 56 students in the experimental group and 53 students in the control group. Data were collected using the Social Studies Achievement Test and Student Engagement Questionnaire . Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions, while Analysis of Covariance , independent samples t-test, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were used to test hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students exposed to AI- integrated instruction achieved significantly higher academic performance than those taught using conventional methods (F(1,106) = 21.85, p < 0.05). The results also showed that AI significantly enhanced students’ engagement (t(107) = 8.72, p < 0.05) and that there was a significant positive relationship between AI usage and learning outcomes (r = 0.64, p < 0.05). Furthermore, no significant gender difference was found in academic achievement within the experimental group (t(54) = 0.56, p > 0.05). The study concluded that AI-integrated instruction is an effective and inclusive approach to improving students’ academic achievement and engagement in Social Studies. It was recommended that educators and policymakers promote the integration of AI into classroom instruction through adequate training, infrastructure provision, and curriculum development to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
