Exploring Web 3.0 Adoption in Nigeria: Opportunities, Challenges, And Future Directions

Benedine, Chinelo Nweke, Nwaoha Stephen Ochiabuto

Abstract

This paper presents an exploratory analysis of Web 3.0, examining its opportunities, challenges, and future prospects within the Nigerian context. With rapid advancements in emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the metaverse, a new paradigm of the Internet Web 3.0 is evolving. Unlike previous web generations, Web 3.0 is characterized by decentralization, transparency, and a “read–write–own” framework that empowers users with greater control over their data and digital assets. The study highlights the growing relevance of Web 3.0 applications, including decentralized finance , non- fungible tokens , and decentralized applications , which are reshaping digital interactions and economic systems. Despite these opportunities, the adoption of Web 3.0 in Nigeria is hindered by several critical challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, regulatory ambiguity, low digital literacy, and high implementation costs. Furthermore, the increasing complexity of Web 3.0 technologies introduces uncertainties in deployment and scalability. This paper analyzes these issues while identifying key application areas capable of driving economic growth and digital transformation in Nigeria. It concludes by recommending strategic investments in digital infrastructure, policy development, capacity building, and educational reforms to facilitate effective adoption.
