Analysis of Sustainable Mine Resources Management in Selected Mineral Industries in Kogi State

Muhammed, M. and Melodi, M.M.

Abstract

This study evaluates sustainable mine resource management, at the study sites, as it relates to the planning, organizing and controlling the extraction and utilization of mineral resources to ensure efficient, sustainable and profitable mining operation. Core practices which include resource optimization and wasted reduction; water and energy management; site management and rehabilitation; emission and pollution control as well as community and social engagement were studied and analyzed. Technological integration such as geomatics, Mining Management Systems , computerized mining software, data mining and analytics were deployed. From field observations and document analysis, it was found that only 45% of mining sites had Environmental Impact Assessments before commencing operations. Waste disposal practices varied, with 60% of companies dumping tailings in open land, leading to soil degradation. Water contamination was reported by 70% of community respondents, mainly due to mining effluents in nearby rivers. Land reclamation efforts were minimal, with only 30% of mines engaging in any form of land rehabilitation after extraction. These findings indicate that if well implemented will reduces resource loss by 20-30%, saves up to 71% in operational costs; reduces emission by 40%; enhances biodiversity; minimizes air/soil erosion and builds “social license to operate”; and reduces conflicts between the operators and the host communities.
