Wave Height and Spectral Bandwidth Interactions: Implications for Offshore and Coastal Engineering
Abstract
This paper investigates the interactions between wave height and wave spectral bandwidth, drawing insights from recent research and case studies. Building on established spectral analysis methods, the study highlights the limitations of significant wave height (Hs) as a standalone indicator of total wave energy in irregular seas. The analysis reveals that broader spectral bandwidths reduce the predictive capacity of Hs, necessitating full spectral characterization. The findings have significant implications for offshore engineering, wave energy conversion, and coastal defense, where accurate representation of sea state energy is essential for safety and performance.
