Anyike, Tari-Ilado Christian , Thankgod, Amaigbani

Abstract

Life skills needs are essential for empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their well-being. The cross-sectional survey research design was employed with a population consisting of 15,023. A sample size of 825 was selected using a multi-stage sampling procedure. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire with a reliability index of 0.89. The data collected were analyzed with the aid of the statistical package for social sciences version 23.0 using mean, standard deviation and ANOVA. The result revealed that life skill needs of the female victims of domestic violence were: effective communication (X̅ = 3.47), problem solving skill (X̅ = 3.43), assertiveness skills (X̅ = 3.43), empathy skills (X̅ = 3.41), emotional skills (X̅ = 3.40), critical thinking skills (X̅ = 3.40), self-awareness skills (X̅ = 3.38), decision making skill (X̅ = 3.35), and interpersonal relationship skills (X̅ = 3.31). Life skill needs were more among those aged 25-29 years (X̅ = 3.29±0.54), who had low education status, higher socio-economic status and were self-employed. The tested hypotheses showed statistically significant difference in life skill need based on occupation [F2, 817) = 5.37; p = 0.00]. It was concluded that, female victims of domestic violence in Rivers State who had life skills need are vulnerable to trauma symptoms. It was recommended among others that, the FIDA should help enhance the life skills of domestic violence victims by taking time to teach them about these skills whenever they visit so it can be sustained among women. Also, men should love their wives, because if there is love, there will be no domestic violence leading to trauma in the home or in the life of the woman.
