Influence of Age on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Unsafe Abortion Among Female Students in Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State
Abstract
This study investigated the influence of age on knowledge, attitude and practice of unsafe abortion among female undergraduate students in tertiary institutions in Port Harcourt metropolis of Rivers State. Six objectives, six research questions and three hypotheses were stated to guide the study. Literature was reviewed under conceptual framework, theoretical framework and empirical review. The design for this study was a cross-sectional survey design. The population of the study was consisted of 70,191. Female undergraduate students in tertiary institutions in Port Harcourt metropolis of Rivers State. A sample size of 400 was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using questionnaire and analysed using percentage and chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that, the respondents had good knowledge of unsafe abortion. The result showed that the grand mean of 2.81 was greater than the criterion means of 2.50 indicating that the respondents had positive attitude towards unsafe abortion. Less than one quarter (22.8%) of the respondents had ever had unsafe abortion. The tested hypothesis showed that there was a statistically significant relationship between age and attitude toward unsafe abortion (p<0.05) and practice (p<0.05). It was concluded that the respondents had good knowledge of unsafe abortion, positive attitude and a substantial proportion had ever undergone unsafe abortion. It was recommended that; Parents should make pragmatic efforts in collaboration with community health extension workers to help young people accurately distinguish between safe and unsafe abortion methods.
