Awareness of Artificial Intelligence Applications in the Teaching and Learning of Physics Among Senior Secondary Schools Teachers in Otuocha Education Zone

Okeke, Emeka Reuben , Udeze, Jireh Chukwuma

Abstract

This study investigated Physics teachers’ awareness of the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the teaching and learning of Physics in senior secondary schools within the Otuocha Education Zone of Anambra State. A descriptive survey research design was employed. The population consisted of all 37 Physics teachers in the zone, comprising 26 males and 11 females. Data were collected using the Artificial Intelligence Awareness Questionnaire , which was face-validated and pilot-tested to establish its internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha, yielding a reliability coefficient of 0.79. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data obtained. The findings revealed that Physics teachers demonstrated a moderate level of awareness of AI applications in teaching Physics. Additionally, no statistically significant difference was found between the mean awareness scores of male and female teachers, indicating comparable levels of awareness across gender. The study further showed that although teachers expressed interest in integrating AI into classroom instruction, they lacked the necessary skills to effectively utilize AI tools. Based on these findings, it was recommended that targeted training programs be provided to equip teachers with the competencies required for the effective use of AI in teaching and learning.
