Cross-Platform Communication Protocols and Universal Standards for Interoperability in Heterogeneous IOT Systems
Abstract
The Internet of Things represents a rapidly expanding paradigm comprising interconnected smart devices capable of sensing, processing, and exchanging data across diverse environments. However, the heterogeneous nature of IoT systems—characterized by varying hardware platforms, communication protocols, and data formats—poses significant challenges to seamless interoperability. This lack of uniformity results in fragmented ecosystems, limiting scalability, integration, and efficient data exchange. To address these challenges, cross-platform communication protocols and universal standards have emerged as critical enablers of interoperability in IoT environments. Protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, HTTP, and AMQP facilitate communication across different layers, while standardization frameworks including oneM2M, IEEE IoT architectures, and OGC Sensor Things API provide guidelines for unified system integration. Studies have shown that adopting multi-protocol architectures and open standards enhances interoperability, reduces latency, and improves system scalability. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of key communication protocols and universal standards for heterogeneous IoT systems. It further analyzes their roles in enabling cross- platform communication and discusses existing challenges and future research directions toward achieving seamless interoperability in large-scale IoT deployments.
