Effects of Different Land Use Systems on Soil Moisture Properties for Sustainable Management Strategies in Yola South Local Government Area, Northern Part of Nigeria
Abstract
The present study aimed to examine the effects of different land use systems on soil properties for sustainable management strategies in Yola South local Government Area, Northern- part of Nigeria. Four different land use namely forest plantation land, cropping land, grazing land and fallow land were selected in the area where twenty soil samples were collected at the depth of 0- 20 cm and 20-40 cm making the total of 40 soil samples in each location totalling to One Hundred and Sixty (160) for the research work. The soil samples were packed in a polythene bags and taken to the laboratory for analysis. The data obtained were subjected to analyses of variance . The results revealed that all the identified moisture characteristics of water holding capacity , field capacity (FC), permanent wilting point and plant available water shows significance difference at < 0.05 % level of probability in all the land use systems. In addition, the increasing order of WHC among the different land use systems are FPL>FLL>CRL>GRL while for FC and PWP was observed to be FPL>CRL>FLL>GRL, FPL>CRL>FLL>GRL and PAW had increasing order of CRL>FLL>FPL>GRL respectively. This implies that CRL have more available moisture content than other land use which might support crop growth and development in the area. However, GRL revealed to have low moisture statuses with high PWP which inconsequence affects growth of pasture and grasses for livestock production. It is recommended therefore, moisture statuses at GRL should be improve through the use soil and water conservation techniques and the FLL should be converted to GRL for effective pasture and forage production in the area.
