Assessment of Hematological Status on the Physiological Conditions of West African Dwarf Goats Kept in a Semi-Intensive System

Abstract

Thirty-Four West African Dwarf goats were investigated in a study to determine the influence of physiological status on haematological profile of female WADG. Three different physiological status (Pregnant, lactating and non-pregnant) does were grouped in a Completely Randomized Design . Nine (9) Does comprising of three does from each physiological status were randomly selected and blood samples harvested for hematological assay. Packed Cell Volume , White Blood Cell , Red Blood Cell , Platelet , Hemoglobin (HB), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin , Mean Corpuscular Volume , Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration , Lymphocyte (L), Neutrophil (N), Eosinophil (E), and Monocytes (M) were analysed, and results subjected to a one way analysis of variance and mean separation was done using Duncan Multiple Range Test at 5% probability. Statistical results observed RBC, E, M and MCHC were not significant (p>0.05) whereas PCV, Hb, WBC, PLT, N, L, MCV and MCH were significant (p<0.05). PCV, HB, WBC, L, MCV and MCH with the corresponding values for pregnant does; 28.67±0.33, 9.5567±0.11, 11.50±0.70, 56.00±1.00, 7.32 ±0.32 and 2.44 ± 0.10 were higher than other groups. PLT and N values for non-pregnant does recorded highest values than lactating and pregnant does with the corresponding values of 238.33±15.62 vs 192.67±11.32 vs 188.00±2.10 and 44.67±1.50 vs 43.67±2.33 vs 37.67±1.50 respectively. Results from the study clearly demonstrated the immense significance of haematological parameters profile with respect to the various physiological status as requirements in maintaining their respective physiological status for the general wellbeing in doe of the WAD.
