Hazardous Waste Management in Mechanical Engineering Technology Workshops in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

Abstract

Hazard is any practice, behavior or physical condition that has the potential to cause: injury, illness, damage to property; damage to the environment; or loss to a process. Mechanical technology workshop is a place where students acquire knowledge on the operation of various processes involved in manufacturing and production. Workplace hazard is any practice, behavior or physical condition that has the potential to cause: injury, illness, damage to property; damage to the environment; or loss to a process. Workshop management in the context of this study may be seen as the general efforts including planning techniques for workshop instruction organizing techniques for implementing workshop instruction and evaluating techniques for workshop instruction. The chapter identified strategies for workshop management to include: planning strategies; organizing strategies, controlling strategies, coordinating strategies and evaluation strategies. Furthermore, it identified operations in mechanical technology workshop such as machining, welding and fabrication, foundry and forging and automobile technology. To achieve this, it is imperative to discuss ways to manage hazardous waste and minimize accident in mechanical technology workshop. The study finally, outlined it contributions to scholarship and institutions.
