Ethical Use, Accuracy and the Role of Librarians in the Artificial Intelligence-Driven Knowledge Era. A Study of Some Selected Polytechnics

Abstract

The study examined the ethical use, accuracy, and roles of librarians in AI-driven library services in polytechnics in Benue State, Nigeria. The research focused on Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo; Federal Polytechnic, Wannune; and Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, Makurdi. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with forty-eight (48) librarians purposively selected to participate, all of whom completed the questionnaire, representing a 100% response rate. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering demographics, awareness of ethical AI use, evaluation of AI-generated information, librarians’ roles and responsibilities, .and challenges encountered. Responses were recorded on a four-point Likert scale, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations, with a mean of 2.5 serving as the benchmark for agreement. The findings revealed that librarians demonstrate moderate awareness and understanding of ethical AI practices, generally verify and guide users on AI-generated information, and actively support ethical use and accuracy. However, gaps were observed in institutional policies, professional training, monitoring of AI systems, and technical support. Challenges identified include inadequate training, limited digital infrastructure, ethical concerns, and restricted access to AI resources. The study recommends developing institutional policies, providing continuous professional training, establishing standardized procedures for verifying AI outputs, enhancing technical support, and investing in digital infrastructure. By addressing these areas, librarians will be better positioned to manage AI technologies effectively, promote ethical practices, and ensure reliable and accurate library services.
