Comparative Study of Two Cultivars of Cassava ( Manihot Esculenta Crantz) in Rivers State

Abstract

Cassava is a major staple crop in Nigeria and it’s cultivated by over 80% farmers in Rivers State. The study examined two improved cultivars of cassava being cultivated in Rivers State to ascertain the most suitable cultivar for cultivation in the state. The cultivars were examined base on yield, stress resistance and conformity to the cultural practice of the people. They were planted in a land area of 351m2 partitioned into12 plots with 1.5m in-between treatments and replicates. They were planted 1m apart. Data were collected 4 weeks after planting and at 4 weeks intervals and analyzed with SAS 2021 version. The study showed that TME419 accumulates dry matter faster than TMS1368/UMUCASS/36 (Yellow Root). TME419 had average plant heights 315.20cm while YELLOW ROOT average plant height was 284.01cm. TME419 had an average of 488.65 leaves with 2.25 shoots while YELLOW ROOT had an average of 785.75 leaves with 1.98 shoots. YELLOW ROOT had higher leaf area duration than TME419. TME419 had fewer number of leaves, lesser plant canopy and volume than YELLOW ROOT. TME419 is more sensitive to zinc deficiency than YELLOW ROOT. TME419 has shorter gestation period than YELLOW ROOT. The yield of TME419 averaged 20.38ton/ha. While YELLOW ROOT yield averaged 25.65ton/ha. YELLOW ROOT had many branched roots while TME419 do not have. Based on the results obtained and the cultural practice of the people, YELLOW ROOT is recommended for people in upland, while TME419 is recommended for industrial and flood plain cultivation because of its early maturity potentials.
