Abstract

Agricultural productivity depends not only on access to land and technology but also on the circulation of accurate, timely, and relevant information. This study examines the awareness and utilization of public library information resources among Soybeans farmers in North East, Nigeria, and a region known as the hub of Soybeans production in the country. Using a descriptive survey design, data were obtained from 420 registered members of the Soybeans Farmers Association of Nigeria through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. The findings reveal that while public libraries in the region provide information resources such as books, bulletins, audiovisual materials, and electronic databases, farmers remain largely unaware of these services. Barriers such as poor funding, shortage of qualified librarians, language barriers, and infrastructural limitations were identified as major obstacles to utilization. The study underscores the strategic role public libraries can play in enhancing agricultural development when adequately resourced and positioned as community information hubs. It concludes with practical recommendations aimed at strengthening library systems, promoting awareness campaigns, tailoring services to meet unique needs of farmers.
