Abstract

This study examined the effects of unemployment on youth in Batagarawa Local Government Area of Katsina State, Nigeria. The research adopted a mixed-method approach involving questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions, and Key Informant Interviews to generate both quantitative and qualitative data. Findings revealed a high prevalence of youth unemployment in the study area, largely attributable to limited government employment opportunities, inadequate job creation by the formal sector, and migration of youth to urban centers. Although many youths engage in informal economic activities such as farming, petty trading, and small-scale businesses as survival strategies, these activities are often insufficient to guarantee sustainable livelihoods. The study further established that unemployment has adverse implications for youth development, including reduced access to resources and limited opportunities for socio- economic advancement. Drawing on structural functionalism, the study highlights how weaknesses in key societal institutions contribute to persistent youth unemployment. The paper concludes that targeted job creation initiatives, improved access to farming facilities, grants, and community-based interventions are essential for reducing youth unemployment and promoting sustainable youth development in Batagarawa LGA.
