The Role of Community Based Health Education in Promoting Sanitation and Hygiene Practices in Ikwerre LGA in Rivers State

Chibuzor Chika PhD, Alete Favour Ndidi

Abstract

This study looks at how community-based health education can improve sanitation and hygiene in Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State. The problem is that poor sanitation and hygiene are common in many communities. This leads to the spread of diseases like cholera and typhoid. Many people lack knowledge about proper practices. They also lack access to basic facilities like toilets and clean water. This research used a survey method. It involved 400 residents selected from different communities in Ikwerre LGA. Data was collected using a questionnaire. The data was analyzed using simple statistics. The findings show that community-based health education can significantly improve people’s knowledge and practices. However, many challenges exist. These include poverty, lack of clean water, and cultural beliefs. The study concludes that health education led by community members is a powerful tool. It recommends more training for community health workers. It also suggests building more toilet facilities and providing clean water sources.
