Digital Literacy and Cybersecurity Awareness Among Students and Educators in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions: Challenges and Implications for Safe Digital Practices

Abstract

This study examined digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness among students and educators in tertiary institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study was guided by three objectives: to assess the level of digital literacy, evaluate cybersecurity awareness, and identify challenges affecting both constructs and their implications for safe digital practices. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised 12,000 students and educators, from which a sample of 387 respondents (300 students and 87 educators) was drawn using a multi- stage sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled Digital Literacy and Cybersecurity Awareness Questionnaire , validated by experts and tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha (≥0.70). Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent t-test and regression analysis) at 0.05 level of significance were used for analysis. Findings revealed a high level of digital literacy (grand mean = 3.25) among respondents, while cybersecurity awareness was moderate (grand mean = 2.98). Identified challenges included lack of cybersecurity training, poor internet security infrastructure, low awareness programs, and negligence in digital safety practices (grand mean = 3.28). Hypotheses testing showed no significant difference between students and educators in both digital literacy (p = 0.26) and cybersecurity awareness (p = 0.29). However, regression analysis indicated that digital literacy (β = 0.42, p < 0.05) and cybersecurity awareness (β = 0.35, p < 0.05) significantly influenced safe digital practices, jointly explaining 58% of the variance (R2 = 0.58). The study concluded that while digital literacy is relatively high, cybersecurity awareness remains insufficient for ensuring safe digital practices. It recommended enhanced training, improved infrastructure, and strengthened institutional policies to promote cybersecurity and responsible digital engagement in tertiary institutions.
