Determination of Some Heavy Metals in Boswellia odorata, Thaumatococcus daniellii, Anogeissus leiocarpus, Erythrina senegalensis and Cochlospermum tinctorium Leaf
Abstract
The assessment of heavy metals in plant species is crucial for understanding environmental health and potential risks to human health. This study focuses on the determination of heavy metals specifically lead, chromium, nickel, and manganese in the leaves of five selected plant species: Boswellia odorata, Thaumatococcus daniellii, Anogeissus leiocarpus, Erythrina senegalensis, and Cochlospermum tinctorium. Utilizing standard analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the concentrations of these metals were quantitatively analyzed. The heavy metal composition of the 5 medicinal plants tested showed no lead composition in Boswellia odorata, Thaumatococcus daniellii, and Anogeissus leiocarpus while Erythrina senegalensis and Cochlospermum tinctorium contain 0.002 mg/100 gram each. Similarly, chromium was only present in Erythrina senegalensis and Cochlospermum tinctorium with 0.0013 and 0.0012 mg/100g respectively. Highest content of nickel was found in Erythrina senegalensis with 0.002mg/100g while absent in Boswellia odorata, and Thaumatococcus daniellii. Manganese content was high in Boswellia odorata Anogeissus leiocarpus and Cochlospermum tinctorium with 0.03 mg/100g each. The result is statistically significant at p<0.05.
