Studies on Physio-Chemical Properties and Fish Species Composition, Distribution and Abundance in Ezu River, Anambra State, Nigeria

Abstract

A study on the physio-chemical parameters and fish species composition, distribution and abundance in Amensea, Ebenebe, and Mgbakwu communities along Ezu River stretch, Anambra state, was carried out for a period of four months to determine physio-chemical properties in relation to fish species composition, distribution and abundance. Samples were collected from each community and were taken to laboratory for analysis. The fish samples were identified with fish data base and local fisher-folks. Fish diversity was determined with Margalef’s Diversity Index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Berger-Parker Dominance Index. Physico-chemical parameters like temperature, pH, transparency, turbidity, and water current were determined insitu. This result showed that there was no significant difference (p> 0.05) in the physico-chemical parameters from the sampling stations, and were within the limits approved for the survival and growth of fish. This study revealed that Oreochromis niloticus, Tilapia zilli, Clarias gariepinus and Silvrus mystus as the most abundant species. While Macrobrachium vollenhovenii, Mormyrops anguilloides and Heptus odoe were the least species found. This indicates that there was significance (p<0.05) in diversity and abundance of fish species in these communities River stretch. Therefore, it is imperative for government agencies to actively enforce laws governing the responsible utilization of water resources in these communities to promote economic growth, conservation, and long-term sustainability.
