Effect of Scent Leaf (Ocimum Gratissimum ) Ethanoic Extract on Enteric Microbial Load of Broilers

Abstract

The increasing concern over antimicrobial resistance in poultry farms has prompted research into alternatives to traditional antibiotics. One of such alternatives is the use of plant-based antimicrobial agents, with Ocimum gratissimum (Scent Leaf) gaining attention for its potential effectiveness. This study investigates the effects of ethanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum on the enteric microbial load in broiler chickens, specifically targeting pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella, which are common in poultry and pose significant public health risks. A total of 20 broiler chickens were divided into five groups: group as control, groups 2,3,4 and 5 receiving 50mg/kg, 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg of scent leaf extract respectively After a four-week treatment period, microbial culture techniques revealed a significant reduction in E. coli and Salmonella in the treatment groups compared to the control. These results suggest that Ocimum gratissimum ethanolic extract could serve as an effective, natural alternative to antibiotics in managing enteric infections in poultry. The findings hold significant implications for improving poultry health and food safety, especially in light of growing concerns about AMR.
