A Painting Studio Exploration of the Nsibidi Symbols

Abstract

This paper presents salient instances of the Nsibidi sign systems with an artistic analysis of the culture in distress. As a result of Western ‘high culture’ over the exclusion and domination of ‘middle-brow’ or third world cultures in the broad field of colonial and neo-colonial activities, the Nsibidi writing system, and local artistic life did not go unscathed under domineering influences of popular culture. The article relates studio-led visual arts expressions to categorize the concepts of specific forms, content and criticisms with very genuine concerns challenging indigenous cultural suppressions.
