Expertise Attitudes of Nursing Mothers Toward Vaccination
Abstract
Vaccination is one of the most effective public health interventions for preventing infectious diseases in children. Nursing mothers play a pivotal role in ensuring that children receive timely and complete vaccinations. This study investigated the Expertise and attitudes of nursing mothers towards Vaccination at Umuagu Health Center in Delta State, with the aim of identifying factors that influence Vaccination practices. The study employed a descriptive survey design, targeting a population of nursing mothers attending the health center. A sample of 100 mothers was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire divided into two sections: Section A captured respondents’ demographic information, while Section B assessed Expertise and attitudes toward Vaccination. The questionnaire responses were analysed using frequency tables and percentages, while the research hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square (χ2) statistics. Findings revealed that while many nursing mothers had basic Expertise of Vaccination, significant gaps existed regarding vaccine schedules and the benefits of completing vaccination courses. Attitudes were found to strongly influence Vaccination practices: positive attitudes, supported by adequate Expertise, trust in healthcare providers, and community influence, led to higher compliance, whereas negative attitudes—driven by misinformation, fear of side effects, cultural beliefs, and poor healthcare experiences—contributed to vaccine hesitancy and delays. Socio-cultural factors, education, and access to health services were also critical determinants of maternal attitudes. The study concludes that improving maternal Expertise alone is insufficient; addressing attitudes through health education, community engagement, and culturally sensitive interventions is essential to enhance Vaccination uptake. Recommendations include strengthening maternal health education, training healthcare providers in communication and counseling skills, and implementing community-based initiatives to address cultural and social barriers to vaccination.
