Examining the Relationship Between Community Participation and Sustainability of Development Outcomes in Safana Local Government Area, Katsina State

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between community participation and the sustainability of development outcomes in Safana Local Government Area, Katsina State, Nigeria. A mixed- methods approach was employed, involving 384 respondents selected through stratified and purposive sampling. Quantitative data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis, while qualitative data from Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions were analyzed thematically. Findings revealed that community participation was highest in project implementation and monitoring (67%) but lower in planning (27%) and decision-making (32%). Only 42% of development projects were fully functional and well-maintained, while 33% were partially functional, and 25% deteriorated. Statistical analysis showed a strong positive relationship between community participation and project sustainability (r = 0.69, p < 0.01), with participation predicting 48% of the variance in sustainability outcomes (R2 = 0.48). Qualitative evidence indicated that projects with active community involvement were more likely to be maintained, as respondents expressed ownership, accountability, and commitment to project upkeep. The study concludes that meaningful community participation at all stages of development enhances sustainability, while limited engagement undermines project longevity. Recommendations include integrating communities into planning and decision-making, promoting gender and age inclusivity, building local capacity, and establishing community monitoring mechanisms to ensure the continued functionality of development initiatives.
