Health Care Workers’ Knowledge and Practices of Waste Management Service in Health Facilities in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Rivers State
Abstract
Over the decades, waste generated from health care activities have contributed to filthy environment and disease causation that affect the welfare of health care workers. In the light of this, medical waste or “biomedical waste” refers to any waste generated during diagnosis, treatment, immunization of human beings or animals, or in research activities pertaining diseases and health problems. Waste management practices have been the centerpiece of disease prevention and control worldwide. The aim of this study is to examine the health care workers’ knowledge and practices of waste management service in health facilities in Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study as the research design. Population is the total number of people in a particular location of interest of which the researcher intended to study. The questionnaire titled Knowledge and Practices of health workers towards Waste Management Service Questionnaire (KPHWMSQ) was administered by the researcher and it trained research assistants on the health personnel’s in Port Harcourt metropolis. Data collected from this study were analyzed using Statistical products for service solution version 23.0. Simple percentage (%) to explain socio demographic characteristics of respondents, while descriptive statistical tools were used to answer research questions. shows the knowledge of waste management service among health care workers based on gender, level of education and work experience. The results showed that 144(75.0%) males, 156(75.0%) females, 300(85.2%) of those with tertiary education, 156(100.0%) of those who had 6-10 years of experience and 144(100.0%) with 11-15 years of experience had good knowledge of waste management service. The results showed that 144(75.0%) males, 208(75.0%) females, 352(85.2%) of those with tertiary education, 156(100.0%) of those who had 6-10 years of experience, 144(100.0%) with 11-15 years of experience and 52(100.0%) with 16-25 years working experience had good practice towards waste management service.
