Ebikiemo Wokoro-Kosipre And Inivie Richard Abraham

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of market architecture on roadside trading along major roads in Port Harcourt Metropolis Rivers State. The descriptive survey research design was used for this study; only one question guided the study. The study population consisted of traders and market users in the study area while the sample constituted of 400 respondents selected through simple random sampling techniques. A validated structured questionnaire that was tested for reliability and scored 0.76 using Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used for data collection. The study analyzed the data using descriptive statistics: mean and standard deviation (SD). The result of the study showed that providing traders with enough standard or well-designed trading stalls, appropriate market layouts with broader walkways and organized circulation route as well as providing flexible/modular market architecture can accommodate surplus traders who would have otherwise engaged in roadside trading alongside major roads. This study concluded that well-designed and flexible market architecture encourages organized trading along and deter commercial activities from overflowing to its adjoining roads. It is recommended that government should decongest our markets by expanding the market structure, provide flexibility in their architectural design and allow for easy accessibility of the markets thereby create more space and ensure effective control of market users.
