The Impact of Medical Procedure in Needle Stick Injuries Among Healthcare Practitioners in Tertiary Hospitals, Rivers State

Abstract

Medical procedure can increase the incidence of needle-stick injuries, especially during invasive and high-risk procedures. More so, severe illness, complex medical conditions, or those requiring invasive procedures may necessitate a higher number of needle-related tasks. Consequently, healthcare workers dealing with such cases may face an elevated risk of needle-stick injuries due to the increased frequency of needle use. Hence, this study investigated the impact of medical procedure in needle-stick injuries among healthcare practitioners in tertiary health hospitals, Rivers State. The study adopted descriptive correlational survey design with a population of 4,100 healthcare workers in the three functional tertiary health institutions in Rivers state. A sample size of 879 was predicted using Cochran formula and a multi-stage sampling procedure. Pearson Products Moment Correlation was used to obtain a Reliability coefficient value of 0.82. Instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “predictors of Needle-stick Injuries among Healthcare Workers Questionnaire” and analyzed using statistical tools such as mean, percentage, frequency, standard deviation and regression at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that, the nature of medical procedure is about 6.1 times more likely to predict P-ISSN 2695-2165 Page 96 needle-stick injury among healthcare workers, and 40% of regular training predicted needle-stick injury. Also, there was a significant prediction of needle-stick injuries by both nature of medical procedures (F-value = 24.712, df = 1, p-value = 0.000), and regular training (F-value = 15.58, df = 1, p-value = 0.000). In conclusion, nature of medical procedure had a high impact on the incidence of needle-stick injury. It was recommended among others that, healthcare managers should provide safety devices like puncture resistant disposal containers, among others, to further reduce NSI incidents among healthcare workers.
