Abstract

Cultism activities in Higher Educational Institution in Nigeria are a worrisome trend that has lingered for too long. There have been measures put in place by the institution, government and stakeholders to eradicate the menace on campuses, it has escalated as students in post-primary schools are recruited into the several confraternity groups in communities that are proxy to the institutions. This research examines the real value of an instructional module and advocacy strategy in obviating cultism germination in Federal Polytechnic Wannune, a nascent higher education institution in Nigeria. The study involves students, landlords and stakeholders in Focus Group Discussion to appraise the impact of anti-cultism strategies or initiatives using qualitative content analysis approach. The Social Leaving Theory and Deterrence Theory as a theoretical framework are adopted to interrogate the subject. Findings propound that targeted advocacy, interactive tryst and community involvement can significantly de-escalate cultism tendencies among students. Sustained anti-cultism enlightenment campaigns, students-led initiatives and collaboration with stakeholders are recommended by the study to obviate cultism in higher institution in Nigeria.
