Cognitive Apprenticeship and Expository Instructional Methods of Teaching Generation and Application of Electric Current in Motor Vehicle Technology in Bayelsa State Technical Colleges
Abstract
The study was designed to find out students' academic performance in generation and application of electric current skills in motor vehicle technology when taught with cognitive apprenticeship and expository instructional methods. Two research questions and two hypotheses.Quasi experimental research design (pretest-posttest) was used for the study. The population of the study comprised 221 Senior Technical Two (ST2) students offering MVT from six technical colleges in Bayelsa State. Purposive Sampling Technique was used since the population was of manageable size and a sample size of 35 participants was obtained. A researcher developed instrument-titled "MotorVehicle Technology Performance Test"(MVTPT ) was used for data collection. The instrument was analysed using Crunbach Alpha Statistical tool which yielded a coefficient of .93. The data generated were analysed using mean for answering the research questions, while Analysis of Covariancewas used for testing the null hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students performed better in generation and application of electric current in motor vehicle when taught with cognitive apprenticeship than expository instructional method. Based on the findings, conclusion was drawn. Recommendations include among others that; cognitive apprenticeship method should be incorporated into the technical college curriculum, and that technical college Principals, in collaburation with the state government, should train and retrain teachers to make use of cognitive apprenticeship instructional method for teaching generation and application of electric current in MVT and other workshop-based subjects.
