Assessing the Benefits of Recreational Tourism Activities for Healthy Living in Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria

Abstract

Recreational tourism activities are socially accepted leisure experience or activity that rest men from work, brings satisfaction often by giving them a change. Recreational tourism activities can help reduce stress levels and improve mental health by providing a break from the daily routine and as a tourist, recreational tourism activities can also significantly impact the environment and local communities. This study examined the benefits of recreational tourism activities for healthy living in Lokoja, Kogi State. It identified recreational tourism facilities. The study adopted mixed approach. A structured questionnaire and in-depth interview were used to elicit data from the respondents. Stratified sampling technique was employed to select 123 respondents. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis was used to analysed the qualitative data. Presentation of the quantitative findings was done in form of frequencies distribution, table and percentages to enable easy interpretation. The study revealed that recreational tourism activities improves health life of Lokoja community. The findings show that recreational tourism activities help to ease out tension, pains and stress from hard work done by individual. The study concluded that recreational tourism activities brought the establishment of recreational facilities in Lokoja community. The study recommends that individual should spare time from daily routine for recreational tourism activities for healthy living.
