Abstract

The study investigated the availability and usage patterns of Information and Communication Technology resources in secondary school libraries within Bayelsa Central Senatorial District. To guide the research, three objectives, three research questions, and two hypotheses were developed. A descriptive survey design was employed for the study. The population consists of 1,680 Senior Secondary One (SS1) students in the district. Six secondary schools were randomly selected from the Bayelsa Central Senatorial Zone, and a total of 120 students participated in the study. Data were collected using an 18-item structured questionnaire titled Availability and Utilization of ICT Facilities in School Libraries Questionnaire (AUICTFISLQ). The instrument was pilot-tested with 30 students who were not part of the main study. Reliability was assessed using the test–retest method and the Pearson Product Moment Correlation , yielding a coefficient of 0.87, indicating high reliability. Data analysis was conducted using mean and standard deviation to address the research questions, while the t-test at a 0.05 level of significance was used to test the hypotheses. Findings revealed that most school libraries lacked sufficient ICT resources, including computers, educational software, webcams, and internet access. Printers, scanners, and photocopiers were available and in use. Students rarely utilized the internet for assignments, and a significant gender difference was observed in the utilization of ICT facilities. The study recommended that government authorities provide additional ICT infrastructure and that school administrators ensure these resources are effectively managed and actively used, to enhance learning, improve academic performance, and prepare students for a technology-driven society.
