IOT-Enabled Smart Waste Management System in Urban Areas: Issues, Opportunities and Challenges
Abstract
Man’s relationship with his environment has since time immemorial proved to be intricate and symbiotic in nature, a relationship dynamic that is progressively shaped and influenced by human consumption, lifestyle choices and advancements in technology. The inevitable exponential evolution of society most notably highlighted by environmental changes as impacted by human behavior and continued interaction with the environment, urbanization and industrialization contributed to a corresponding increase in consumption patterns and the eventual generation of waste. The rise in waste generation has raised eyebrows and concerns over the health of the earth and the trade-offs emanating from the interactions between man and his environment as the impact of human consumption is balanced with environmental sustainability. The dangers associated with mismanaged waste have continued to be more prevalent in today’s world because generally, as countries become wealthier, the rate of industrialisation and urbanisation increases, housing and consumption patterns change, and a wider range of products becomes available in the market. This, in turn, drives an increase in the average amount of municipal waste generated per person. As consumption patterns increase, the composition and quantity of waste becomes more complex, frequently exceeding the capacity of generic waste management systems. This paper provides a review of waste management techniques, opportunities brought about by the Internet of Things in the waste management techniques and challenges associated with waste management techniques that act as future research directions.
