Architectural Design Strategies for Proposed Resilient Housing Development for Revitalization of Waterfront, Port Harcourt
Abstract
This study explored the architectural design strategy for resilient housing development, aimed at the revitalization of waterfront communities, with a focus on high-tide resilient building strategies. Waterfront areas, though naturally appealing and economically significant, often face challenges such as flooding, erosion, and tidal fluctuations that threaten their habitability and sustainability. The study explores adaptive architectural responses that integrate resilience, sustainability, and aesthetic value into the built environment. Through contextual analysis, case studies, and site evaluation, the research analysis design principles that mitigate the impact of high tides while enhancing community life and environmental harmony. Key strategies include elevated structural systems, amphibious foundations, use of flood-resistant materials, integration of green infrastructure, and incorporation of passive design principles for energy efficiency. The proposed design framework not only ensures physical resilience against tidal forces but also promotes socio- economic regeneration, environmental preservation, and aesthetic enhancement of the waterfront. Ultimately, this project demonstrates how innovative architectural interventions can transform vulnerable waterfronts into vibrant, sustainable, and resilient urban communities through the design of housing development that harmonizes with its dynamic coastal ecosystem.
