Environmental Sustainability Implications of Constant Power Distribution in Nigeria: Evidence from Aba Power Electricity: A Review

Abstract

Nigeria’s electricity sector continues to face systemic challenges, including inadequate generation capacity, fragile transmission infrastructure, and inefficient distribution networks. These issues have resulted in frequent blackouts and widespread reliance on diesel and petrol generators, which contribute to environmental degradation, greenhouse gas emissions, and economic inefficiencies. Constant power distribution — defined as uninterrupted and stable electricity supply — has emerged as a promising solution to these challenges. This paper examines Aba Power Electricity in Aba, Abia State, as a pioneering case study of constant power distribution in Nigeria. Using a qualitative case study approach and drawing on recent literature (2023–2025), the study explores Aba Power’s initiatives, including smart meter deployment, infrastructure upgrades, renewable energy integration, and consumer engagement. Findings indicate that generator usage among industries declined by nearly 60% between 2023 and 2025, while emissions of CO₂, PM2.5, and NOx fell by approximately 25%. These outcomes demonstrate measurable environmental benefits, improved public health, and enhanced industrial productivity. The analysis further highlights the role of constant power distribution in supporting Nigeria’s climate commitments, fostering socio‑economic development, and enabling technological innovation through smart grids. Despite challenges such as high capital costs, regulatory bottlenecks, and resistance from entrenched generator markets, opportunities exist in green financing, public‑private partnerships, regional replication, and community co‑ownership of renewable projects. The study concludes that constant power distribution is not only a technical innovation but also a holistic sustainability strategy, offering a replicable model for Nigeria’s energy transition.
