Utilizing Cohesive Lighting System in A Modern Art Museum
Abstract
Museums have become relevant in our society due to their major functions, which are to collect, preserve, interpret, and showcase objects old and new that represent the cultural heritage of specific communities in various regions. This master’s dissertation aims to explore the design integration of various lighting techniques (both natural and artificial) to create lighting systems that can enhance the visitors' engagement and experience in modern art museums. The research approach will incorporate a combination of case studies and qualitative research techniques to examine existing structures that serve similar purposes, essential for this study. The results of this research demonstrate that integrated lighting systems provide various advantages in a museum environment. For instance, the use of clerestories and strategically placed windows can enhance the lighting quality in exhibition spaces, and the use of advanced lighting technologies, such as LED fixtures and smart controls, notably decreases energy usage and supports sustainability objectives. Additionally, integrated lighting systems can greatly improve the visibility and appreciation of artworks, while also protecting them for the long term by reducing the detrimental impacts of light exposure. The research findings add value to the larger field of architectural design and offer practical suggestions for architects, designers, and construction professionals by offering a thorough insight into how integrated lighting systems can improve the overall museum experience and also promote sustainability and energy efficiency in the museum
