The Gendered Dimensions of Productivity Differentials among Rice Farmers in Nigeria
Abstract
The gendered dimensions of productivity differentials among rice farmers in Nigeria is a significant issue, with women farmers facing various constraints that limit their productivity and livelihoods. This review, therefore, aims to explore the gendered dimensions of productivity differentials among rice farmers in Nigeria and also investigate the reasons behind the persistence of productivity disparities. The findings reveal that women rice farmers in Nigeria face significant constraints, including limited access to land, credit, technology, and extension services, leading to lower productivity levels compared to men. Cultural and social barriers, such as gender roles and stereotypes, also hinder women's ability to adopt new technologies and practices. The review reveals that there are significant gaps and inconsistencies in the literature. The review highlights the importance of considering the impact of climate change, technology, and cultural and social norms on the productivity of male and female rice farmers. It emphasises the need to address gender-based disparities to improve agricultural productivity, food security, and women's empowerment. The article concludes that addressing these gender-based disparities is crucial for improving agricultural productivity, food security, and women's empowerment and that there is the need for more studies on rice farming specifically, as well as the need for more data on women's productivity. The review recommends among others the need for gender-sensitive policies and interventions to address these disparities and promote gender equality in the rice sector.
