Assessment of the Adequacy and Utilization of Woodwork Trade Resources in Urban and Rural Technical Colleges in Delta State

Abstract

This study assessed the adequacy and utilization of woodwork trade resources in urban and rural technical colleges in Delta State, Nigeria. The provision and effective use of instructional resources are critical to achieving the objectives of technical and vocational education, particularly in skill-based trades such as woodwork. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised technical college teachers offering woodwork trade programs in Delta State, Nigeria comprising of 23430 students and 420 teachers. A multistage sampling technique was used to categorized colleges based on their location. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled: Assessment of the Adequacy and Utilization of Woodwork Trade Resources Questionnaire (AAUWTRQ). The reliability of the instruments was established using a test-retest reliability while the reliability of the checklist was established by NBTE. The coefficient of internal consistency computation of the subscales of the instrument was adequacy of resources .893, functionality of resources .740, utilization of resources .946. Frequency count was used to analyze the demographic data, Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test statistics were employed to test the null hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that woodwork trade resources were generally inadequate in both urban and rural technical colleges, with rural colleges being more adversely affected. Additionally, the utilization of available resources was found to be low, particularly in rural institutions. Significant differences were observed between urban and rural technical colleges in terms of both adequacy and utilization of woodwork trade resources. The study concluded that inadequate provision and underutilization of woodwork resources hinder the effective acquisition of practical skills. It was recommended, among others, that government and relevant stakeholders
