Abstract

The study was based on the impact of tourists on the socio-cultural lifestyles of beach communities: A case study of Oniru and Elegushi beach resort of Lagos State. The massive influx of tourists to relatively small areas have a vast impact on the indigenous beliefs and influence the cultural setting, traditional values and pattern of the community’s lifestyles. Descriptive survey research design was adopted involving the use of qualitative method. The data collection method involved the use of structured interview, participant observation and focused group discussion. It was established that most of the tourists are not aware of the tradition and cultural values of the beach communities and the lifestyles of the tourists possess complex challenges which is a major constraint to the development of local culture and traditions of the beach communities. The beach communities were known for their deep- rooted traditions, but the gradual loss of cultural values arises from the impact of constant inflow of tourists’ visit for the purpose of relaxation and pleasure. The beach is unique and nature-based tourist attraction; they are lovely places where culture and nature interplay in a unique way. Thus, it should be geared toward responsible trip that can conserve sustain the well-being of the local people and their cultures, to promote and protect local culture to boost development that will make the communities more viable for tourism activities.
