Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Bio-Based Teabags: Microplastic Formation and Degradation Pathways

Abstract

Research into the degradation of bio-based teabags, often touted as eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, is crucial due to concerns about microplastic pollution. Materials like polylactic acid , cellulose, and hemp are used to reduce plastic waste, but their biodegradability and potential for microplastic release remain unclear. This review examines the degradation mechanisms of these teabags, the factors affecting biodegradation, and microplastic emissions. While bio-based materials may decompose well in industrial composting, environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity can hinder their breakdown, leading to persistent microplastics in ecosystems. PLA teabags, in particular, release significant microplastic particles when exposed to hot water, with cellulose-based teabags also posing risks, albeit to a lesser degree. The impact of these microplastics on both ecosystems and human health highlights the need for sophisticated analytical techniques for their detection and quantification. This review emphasizes the necessity for further research into the biodegradation of bio-based teabags and the development of stricter regulations to prevent worsening plastic pollution.
