AI And National Economic Growth: Exploring the Role of STEM Education in Workforce Transformation in Nigeria
Abstract
The rapid emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies is transforming global economic systems, workforce structures, and education systems. In Nigeria, the integration of AI within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education holds significant potential to enhance innovation, productivity, and economic growth. This study empirically examined the role of STEM education in driving workforce transformation through AI literacy and adoption, focusing on how educational preparation aligns with Nigeria’s evolving technological economy. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from 210 respondents comprising STEM educators, students, and professionals across Rivers, Lagos, and Abuja. Results revealed a positive correlation between AI-integrated STEM education and workforce adaptability (r = 0.78, p < 0.05), with 72% of participants acknowledging AI’s contribution to job creation and skill development. The study concludes that enhancing AI-driven STEM education is pivotal to fostering an innovative, competitive, and sustainable economy. Recommendations were made for curriculum reform, policy implementation, and industry– academia partnerships to promote an AI-ready workforce.
